About this visa
The Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) lets young adults from partner countries holiday in Australia for up to 12 months and work to help fund their stay. For India, China and Vietnam, the first visa is allocated by an annual ballot because demand far exceeds the number of places. It is a temporary holiday visa, not a route to permanent residence.
Benefits of the Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)
What the 462 can offer if you are selected and granted, subject to its conditions.
Travel and Work Together

Up to Three Visas
Eligible holders can stay up to 12 months on each of up to three visas after meeting the specified-work rules.
A Fair Draw

India, China and Vietnam do not need a separate government support letter.
Flexible Dates
You have 12 months from the grant to enter Australia, and your 12-month stay starts on first entry.

Work and Holiday Visa (Subclass 462) — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462)?
The 462 lets young adults from partner countries holiday in Australia for up to 12 months and work to help fund their stay. It is a temporary holiday visa, not a route to permanent residence. Only the Department of Home Affairs decides whether it is granted.
Which passports are eligible for the 462?
The 462 covers around 30 countries, including the United States, China, India, Vietnam, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and Thailand. The list changes, so check the official list. Your passport decides, not where you live.
Can Indian passport holders living in the UAE apply?
Yes, if they are 18 to 30 and meet the education and English requirements. India is a ballot country, so a first visa needs selection in a random draw, and you apply from outside Australia, which includes the UAE.
What is the 462 ballot?
It is a random draw used for China, India and Vietnam, because demand far exceeds the number of places. You register once during an annual window, pay AUD 25, and Home Affairs selects registrants at random in rounds. Selection only gives you the right to apply.
Is the 2026–27 ballot still open?
No. Registration ran from 4 to 25 June 2026 and has closed. Draws continue in rounds across the program year for those who registered. The next window has not been announced, so check Home Affairs.
How many places are there for India?
The 2026–27 cap for first 462 visas is 1,000 for India, unchanged from 2024–25. China has 5,000 and Vietnam 1,500.
What are my chances of being selected?
They are low and cannot be predicted. In 2024–25, one report counted about 98,000 valid registrations from India for 1,000 places, which is roughly one in 98. Many registrants also turn out ineligible, but nobody can promise selection.
Can anyone improve my chances in the ballot?
No. The draw is random, and nobody can prioritise or guarantee a registration. Be cautious about anyone selling guaranteed selection, because it is not possible.
How much does the ballot cost?
Registration costs AUD 25, which is non-refundable in all circumstances. This is separate from the visa application charge, which is only paid if you are selected and apply.
How much does the visa cost?
The visa application charge is reported at about AUD 840 and rises each 1 July. You pay it only if you are selected. Confirm the current amount with Home Affairs.
What education do I need?
For India, at least two years of completed post-secondary study, such as a degree, diploma or equivalent. You prove this when you apply, not when you register.
What English level do I need?
Functional English, usually an IELTS average of 4.5 or an equivalent test result, less than 12 months old. Some applicants can show English in other ways, so check which evidence applies.
How much money do I need to show?
Plan on about AUD 5,000 in available funds, plus a return airfare or funds to buy one. Keep recent bank statements ready.
What happens if I am selected?
You receive a notification and have 28 calendar days to lodge a complete application from outside Australia. If you miss the deadline, the invitation expires.
What work can I do?
You can generally do most types of work, but you can usually work for the same employer for no more than six months. Check the conditions printed on your visa.
Can I study on a Work and Holiday visa?
Yes, but study or training is generally limited to four months for each visa. Longer study needs a student visa.
Can I stay longer than 12 months?
Possibly. You may be able to apply for a second visa after 88 days of specified work and a third after 179 days, subject to the current rules. Keep clear evidence of your work.
What is the difference between the 417 and the 462?
The 417 is for passport holders of 19 mostly European and East Asian countries, with no caps, ballot or English test. The 462 covers about 30 other countries, with caps, a ballot for China, India and Vietnam, and functional English.
Can the 462 lead to permanent residence?
Not directly. It is a temporary holiday visa. Some holders later qualify for other visas, such as a skilled or employer-sponsored visa, but each has its own requirements.
Is there another route for Indian graduates?
A separate Australia–India arrangement for early-career professionals has been announced, but places, eligible institutions and dates are limited and change. Ask us to check the current details.
Do I need a registered migration agent?
No, you can apply yourself. But if you pay anyone for immigration assistance on an Australian visa, Australian law requires that person to be a registered migration agent or a lawyer. Check any agent on the OMARA public register.
Can Visatrix Global guarantee my selection or visa?
No. Visatrix Global is an independent advisory firm. The ballot is random, and only the Department of Home Affairs decides whether to select you and whether a visa is granted. No consultant can guarantee either, or processing times. We help you understand the requirements and prepare accurate documents.
