Engineers Australia Skills Assessment: CDR Writing Guide for Migration Engineers
Step-by-step guide to Engineers Australia skills assessment for migration. Learn how to write Competency Demonstration Reports, career episodes, and summary statements for Stage 1 assessment.
Engineers Australia Skills Assessment Guide
Engineers Australia is the designated assessing authority for engineering occupations under Australia's skilled migration program. A positive skills assessment from Engineers Australia is mandatory before applying for most skilled visas. The assessment evaluates your engineering qualifications and competencies against Australian standards.
Stage 1 Competency Assessment
The Stage 1 assessment determines whether your engineering qualifications are substantially equivalent to an Australian Engineering qualification. Three pathways exist: Accredited Qualification pathway (for graduates of Washington Accord or Sydney Accord accredited programs), Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) pathway (for engineers without accredited qualifications), and Applied knowledge and skills assessment (for experienced engineers). Most international applicants use the CDR pathway, which requires demonstrating competency through career episodes.
Competency Demonstration Report Structure
A CDR consists of three Career Episodes (each 1,500-2,500 words), a Summary Statement (mapping career episodes to Engineers Australia competency elements), and a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) list. Each career episode describes a specific engineering project or work period, the applicant's personal role and responsibilities, the technical knowledge applied, and the outcomes achieved. Career episodes must demonstrate competency across 16 elements covering knowledge and skill base, engineering application ability, and professional and personal attributes.
CDR Writing Best Practices
Successful CDRs demonstrate clear problem-solving abilities and engineering judgment. Use the STAR method: describe the Situation, Task, Action, and Result for each project. Include specific technical details such as standards applied (AS/NZS standards, ISO), calculations performed, software used, and design parameters. Avoid generic descriptions; Engineers Australia assessors look for specific engineering outcomes. Use technical language appropriate to your discipline. Ensure your Summary Statement correctly maps each paragraph of your career episodes to the relevant competency element.
ANZSCO Code Selection
Selecting the correct ANZSCO code is critical as it determines which skilled migration lists you can access. Common codes include 233111 Chemical Engineer, 233211 Civil Engineer, 233311 Electrical Engineer, 233411 Electronics Engineer, 233511 Mechanical Engineer, 233612 Petroleum Engineer, 233913 Biomedical Engineer, 233914 Engineering Technologist, and 233915 Environmental Engineer. Your qualifications and work experience must align with the selected code's defined scope.
Processing Time and Fees
Engineers Australia Stage 1 assessment costs AUD 855 for the standard CDR pathway and takes 12-16 weeks for processing. Fast-track processing is available for an additional AUD 300 and reduces time to 4-6 weeks. Reports are valid for five years. If your Stage 1 assessment is negative, you can request a review within 60 days or reapply with a stronger CDR. Stage 2 assessment is required for Professional Engineer migration and involves a technical interview.
